Usein kysytyt kysymykset (FAQ)

What is YEL and why is it mandatory?

YEL (Yrittäjän eläkevakuutus) is the mandatory pension insurance for self-employed people in Finland. It is required if you earn over €8,575/year from self-employment and are between 18–67 years old. Unlike an employee, you pay both the employee and employer portions. The 2026 rate is 24.1% (or 18.08% with the new entrepreneur discount for the first 4 years under the 2023 reform).

How does YEL income affect my pension?

Your YEL income is the direct basis for your future pension calculation. Every euro of declared YEL income = pension rights accruing at 1.5% per year. Setting it at €20,000 when you earn €80,000 means your pension will be approximately 75% lower than if you set it at market value. Finnish pension experts generally recommend setting YEL income at the salary equivalent of your work.

Can I deduct YEL contributions from taxes?

Yes — 100% of your YEL contributions are deductible from your taxable income (both state and municipal tax). This partially offsets the cost. However, the contribution is calculated on YEL income, which is a separate declared amount from your actual revenue.

What is ennakkovero (advance tax)?

Finnish self-employed pay income tax in advance via ennakkovero instalments, typically monthly or bi-monthly. You apply for an advance tax card from Vero (Finnish Tax Authority). If you overpay, you get a refund (veronpalautus). If you underpay, you pay back-tax (jäännösvero) plus interest. Always set your ennakkovero slightly above your expected tax to avoid penalties.

What expenses can I deduct as a Finnish yrittäjä?

Deductible expenses include: home office (proportional rent + utilities), phone and internet (business %), travel (actual cost or Vero mileage rate €0.57/km in 2026), equipment, software, professional development courses, accounting fees, and subcontractor costs. Keep all receipts — Vero audits are data-driven and efficient.

Is this calculator accurate for all business forms?

This calculator is accurate for toiminimi (sole trader / individual entrepreneur — liikkeen- ja ammatinharjoittaja). For osakeyhtiö (Oy / limited company), taxation is different — corporate tax 20% + dividend taxation applies. If operating as an Oy, the optimization logic is entirely different and not covered here.
